Part of discovering the magic of Crete is about aligning your journey with the island's rhythmic seasonal changes, each offering its own unique flavor and experiences.
Winter (Ο χειμώνας)
Winter is when the island breathes a sigh of relief and takes a much-needed break from hosting such a large number of travellers. Many of the hotels, tavernas and activities close down for a few months, flights are only available to Athens, Thessaloniki and Cyprus, and the roads empty out.
The countryside becomes covered by a shade of green, the mountain tops fill with snow, and the light is cooler in its hues and colours. Depending on the weather (which is Mediterranean and therefore unpredictable in winter), you may be out hiking in the sun or inside enjoying a meal by the fireplace.
Come for: empty roads and beaches, (cold) winter swims, walks and hikes, peace, cosy fires, delicious soups and stews.
Spring (Η άνοιξη)
Spring is when the island opens up again. Flowers explode under the olive groves and on the side of the roads, and there is a gradual increase in visitors and cars as the direct flights begin again in March.
In the lead-up to Greek Easter, everyone busies themselves pruning, cutting, painting and repairing, ready to receive a fresh wave of visitors. The sea gets colder for a bit as the mountain snow melts, and the beaches gradually fill with both locals and tourists alike. The light becomes markedly more intense and bright as the months go by.
Come for: Spring festivities (Carnival and Greek Easter), some of the best months of the year for quiet sunny beaches (April & May), walks and hikes in colourful surroundings, swimming in warmer seas and open-air farmers markets.
Summer (Το καλοκαίρι)
Summer is what Crete is famous for, and when most people visit the island, bursting at the seams with life. Summer is the season of concerts, music festivals, lounging on the beach for hours on end, and diving into the hustle and bustle of shaded city streets. Be prepared for intense heat, dry landscapes, busy roads and streets, and sun beds on every beach.
And yet, summer is an exciting time to be on the island, with so much to do, so many people to watch, endless blue skies and guaranteed great weather. The sea is warm, the light is bright and the sunsets are golden. And while the locals may be overworked and overtired, most of them will still do their best to make sure you have a great time.
Come for: hot weather, warm seas, exciting nightlife, festivals and concerts, any kind of activity you can imagine, delicious Greek food, iced coffees (Freddos), ice cream, and refreshing drinks.
Autumn (Το φθινόπωρο)
Autumn offers again some of our favourite months. As the school terms begin again across Europe, the island welcomes a quieter type of tourist for the remaining months of the year. The weather gradually becomes more changeable, although the sun can remain strong well into November and sometimes longer. The contrast between sun and shade becomes increasingly noticeable (and confusing as to what to wear!).
As the first rains arrive (usually mid to end of September), the landscapes turn back to green. In November the direct flights stop, many of the touristy areas close, and the locals begin the olive harvest. The roads gradually empty out as the hire cars are parked away for the winter, and the island exudes a welcoming calmness.
Come for: the olive harvest, quieter beaches, warm weather, hiking and walking, swimming and more relaxed locals.
